Plan 1-2 years ahead, but live one day at a time. There have been times when I've come across something I'm really interested in, but I didn't think ahead of time and it was too late to apply/get involved. You don't have to have everything figured out, but thinking about what you want to be doing in a year or two is a good way to keep you on track for your goals.
